A man quits his job to take care of his dying grandmother, motivated by his fortune. Usa Semkhum, a 78-year-old housewife, plays the role of Grandma Meng Ju. M: Do you ever feel lonely? Amah: I wouldn’t call it lonely. It’s part of the process of life. Amah: I have a problem with the day after Chinese New Year. When all the leftovers from the night before are in the fridge and I know I’ll have to eat them all by myself. No matter how hard I try to hold back the tears, the wall will probably collapse in the end, against the backdrop of a pickup truck offering such a beautiful farewell. A question arises when watching that scene. Are the tears falling because the film is well-made, or simply because viewers (including me) immediately connect the events on the screen to personal memories? The answer is “both.” How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies is relatable because it deeply understands family dynamics, especially in Asian families. How inheritance can erase affection, how gathering at grandma’s house is a warm moment always expected, how grandma eagerly awaits the arrival of her children and grandchildren while wearing her best clothes, and how the loneliness after being together seems so piercing, especially for the elderly who live alone. The memories of all those moments together are a truly precious legacy.
